Jaguar has revealed the Type 01 in New York, the first production car of the reinvention it launched nearly two years ago. The four-door electric grand tourer produces up to 1,015 hp, has a range of up to 720 km and is priced from £130,000, or Dh635,000 in The National's conversion. Orders are due to open in early 2027, with first customer deliveries expected in the second half of the year.
Jaguar staged the reveal across the city. According to The National, the car was projected onto digital displays in Times Square, Dumbo and the Lower East Side before appearing in person at Storied in West Chelsea. The brand also announced the actor Florence Pugh as the first ambassador of its new era.
For the first time since the relaunch, Jaguar's new direction has a price, a range figure and a date.
From concept to production
The Type 01 has been a long time coming. Jaguar unveiled its new identity and its "Copy Nothing" campaign in November 2024, and paused sales of new cars in the UK ahead of the relaunch. The slogan draws on a principle long attributed to the company's founder, Sir William Lyons: that a Jaguar should be a copy of nothing. A month later, in December 2024, it showed the Type 00 concept in Miami. The design divided opinion, and The National describes the reinvention as controversial.
The production car keeps much of the concept's provocative shape: a very long bonnet, a low roofline and a cabin set well back towards the rear wheels. The National notes that these proportions echo the E-type and the XJS without remaking either car. The Type 01 rides on 23-inch wheels and is 5.2 metres long but only 1.4 metres high.
There is no conventional rear window. A camera feeds a digital rear-view display instead. Active vanes and a spoiler that deploys in three stages give the car a drag coefficient of 0.23, a measure of how easily a shape slips through the air, where a lower figure is better. Jaguar calls the Type 01 the most aerodynamic road car it has made.
Power and range
A grand tourer is a car made to cover long distances quickly and in comfort, and the Type 01 has the performance for the role. It is built on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture, known as JEA. Three electric motors produce up to 1,030 PS (1,015 hp) and 1,365 Nm of torque, which makes it the most powerful Jaguar road car yet. It reaches 100 km/h from rest in 3.2 seconds and goes from 100 to 180 km/h in a further four seconds.
The chassis has 50:50 weight distribution, with the mass split evenly between front and rear. All-wheel steering and torque vectoring, which shifts drive between the wheels to help the car turn, draw on Jaguar's experience in Formula E, the electric single-seater championship.
The 850-volt electrical system supports a range of up to 720 km on WLTP, the standard laboratory test used in Europe. On a 350 kW charger, it can add up to 200 miles, about 320 km, in 13 minutes.
A different kind of cabin
Jaguar showed the interior before the car itself, at Monterey Car Week in California in August. Il Sole 24 Ore reported a cabin organised around a central spine, with four individual seating areas, low-set seats and trim that evokes brass. The most notable absence was the usual touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard. In the paper's reading, Jaguar is pursuing its own idea of digital luxury, with fewer displays and more emphasis on space, materials and drama.
What is in a name
The name is a statement of intent. "Type" refers to Jaguar's historic models, from the C-type and D-type racers of the 1950s to the E-type. The "0" stands for zero tailpipe emissions, and the "1" marks the first car of the new generation.
That history is long. Jaguar began in 1922 as William Lyons's Swallow Sidecar Company, and its E-type of 1961 remains one of the most celebrated car designs of all. Today the brand is part of JLR, which is owned by India's Tata Motors.

The Gulf view
At £130,000, the Type 01 moves Jaguar into the luxury grand tourer class, a segment that buyers across the Gulf know well. The National gives a starting price of Dh635,000, but regional pricing, availability and delivery dates for the Gulf have not yet been confirmed.
The car is the first real test of Jaguar's move upmarket. The design will continue to divide opinion, but the figures are now public: 1,015 hp, 720 km and a price that places Jaguar in new company. With orders due to open in early 2027, the long wait for Jaguar's next chapter is nearly over.
